Volunteer Spotlight – Debbie Costello

debbieVolunteer Spotlight – Debbie Costello

Last year, Debbie Costello, a teacher at Visions in Education Charter School, knew a friend’s 88 year old mother who was looking to volunteer. While volunteering on a regular basis may not have panned out for her elder friend, Debbie herself found a new home. In addition to volunteering in the Food Bank’s stock room on Wednesday nights, she also has an important job managing the OVFB’s Adopt-a-Month program* where community members – schools, churches, clubs, etc. – can hold food drives to help keep the Food Bank’s shelves filled.

When asked why she volunteers, Debbie [pictured in the middle] said she feels that, “If you don’t volunteer, you’re not complete.” And Debbie finds plenty of opportunities to volunteer her time and give back to the community. One thing she does is something she says anyone can do, including kids: toiletry kits for the homeless. She suggests having a drive to collect unused hotel or trial size toiletries and packaging items in Ziploc bags. She keeps some on hand in her car – along with non-perishable snacks she adds to the bags – and shares them with those in need.

Debbie finds the most meaningful thing about volunteering with OVFB is the community that is created. She has an opportunity to not only work with the amazing volunteers and neighbors that visit the Food Bank, but also has a unique opportunity to work with so many passionate groups across the community with the Adopt-a-Month program. She also noted how rewarding it is to work with many students who volunteer their time at the Food Bank, seeing how they’re positively affected firsthand.

On behalf of the OVFB, we thank Debbie for her many contributions to our team and community.

*We’re always looking for new sponsors for the Adopt-a-Month program. We are in most need during our summer months, and also have an upcoming month open (April). Please email or call us for more information.
