If there’s one thing that frames the mission of the Orangevale Food Bank, it’s our commitment to community. Really, it’s the sole purpose we’re here. We’re fortunate to not only have an amazing community to serve and volunteer alongside, but also a fantastic community of partners and organizations to collaborate with and support. One of those fantastic organizations is a local non-profit, AboutKidz, which exists to create equal opportunities for kids to achieve by meeting practical needs for the underprivileged children of our surrounding communities. Now in its seventh year, AboutKidz serves children in our local community in a number of ways, one of which is First Day, a community driven outreach event to assist families in obtaining basic back-to-school needs for their children.
Because we value the importance of children volunteering in our community, we partnered with the AboutKids organization this year for their First Day back-to-school event by providing each family with food for school lunches. In early July, families and children of all ages came to the Food Bank for a morning long event to learn about our mission and services, as well support activities to help the Food Bank and its partners. We put the kids (and adults) to work in packing grocery boxes with lunch supplies and after school snacks to distribute at First Day. With 220 boxes packed in less than a couple hours, plus the remainder the following week, we ultimately delivered 300 boxes to the 300 families and 600 kids at the First Day event held July 25th at the New Life Community Church in Fair Oaks. At the event, children were provided with new backpacks, school supplies, clothes, shoes, haircuts, and food items, all in a fun carnival style event with games, activities, back-to-school pictures, and a free BBQ for families.
Like AboutKidz who focuses on making families feel valued and important, the mission of the Orangevale Food Bank is to offer love and support to our community. We’re grateful for the opportunity to provide volunteers and food (generously donated by all of our community friends and partners) to support the drive and event, and look forward to continuing our support of AboutKidz.
